The Blackwave system is the first purpose built system for Internet Video storage and delivery leveraging a 10Gb/s Ethernet Grid architecture that easily scales to many PBs of storage and Tb/s of performance. While traditional system tie together storage capacity with performance capabilities the Blackwave system independently scales streaming or download performance or content storage capacity making it possible for the first time to scale a system to meet the performance and capacity requirements of a system now and into the future. In a single system the Blackwave system provides what traditionally would take several vendors to deliver and internal engineering resources to coble together and upgrade to keep up with the demands of the end customers.

Traditional Internet Video storage and delivery systems leverage storage based hardware and software that were designed to provide a fixed level of performance regardless of the data stored on the system volumes and distributed file system. These traditional systems were built to handle the rigors of transactional processing with its billions of financial transactions in which each transaction has a fixed, small file size of 4Kb/s and there is no real performance curve for the data – this is where Internet Video is different – content has a known performance curve and requirements in terms of its ability to generate revenue. User Generated Content has a performance curve that can be established based on real-world usage. Maping that performance curve and the content’s requirements for resilience and integrity is where Blackwave sets a new standard for optimization – each piece of content can have a set performance level that is adhered to and can be adjusted in real-time to handle the requests of the end-users. Through automating the provisioning of the content the Blackwave system provides real-world intelligence into the resource utilization by each piece of content intelligently laying out each piece of content across the system to handle performance, resilience, and integrity requirements without intervention. The Blackwave system dynamically adjusts system resources for a piece of content which is all but impossible in traditional systems that would require the underlying volume and file system to be recreated, possibly taking days all the time the system is unavailable, based on the current performance requirements, only to be outdated moments later.
